Shima Shima Kids (short)

Shima Shima Kids (short)
Very simple and fast project. Great for using up your stash yarn. Easy to adjust the length and width. Sample is shown in solid line green yarn and variegated pink/red/green yarn.

Finished Measurement: child, to fit hand 6" circumference. Length: 6.5", width: 3".
Yarn: 1 skein each of solid and variegated DK or worsted weight yarn
Shown in: Malabrigo silky merino (sunny lime 407), Mochi plus (color 556).
Needles: Double pointed US7 or 8 needles to get the required gauge, or 32" circular needles, using magic loop method.
Notions: Crochet hook, tapestry needle, waste yarn.
Gauge: 4 sts per inch in the stockinette pattern.

BO: bind off
CO: cast on
k: knit
m: make
p: purl
pm: place marker

Directions:
  1. Garter rows:
    • CO 24 with color A (green in sample) yarn.
    • R1: Join and P in the round with color A.
    • R2: K with color B (red/pink variegated in sample).
    • R3: P with color B.
    • R4: K with color A.
    • R5: P with color A.
    • R6-15: Repeat in this manner until the you have 8 ridges.
  2. Stockinette rows:
    • R1-2: K with color A
    • R3-4: K with color B
    • R5-10: continue in the stripe pattern until there are 5 stripes total, ending with color A
  3. Thumb gusset:
    • Move the beginning of the row to the other end: K12 with color B. This is going to be the beginning of the row now, and this is also going to be the beginning of the thumb. (This is so that the seam will be on the pinky side.) The color change will remain at the other side (pinky side) of the hand. Continue with the stripe pattern throughout.
    • R1 (increase rnd): K1, pm, M1, k1 M1, pm knit to the end (beginning of the thumb). 2 sts increased, 3 sts between markers for thumb.
    • R2: K.
    • R3 (Increase rnd): K1, sl m, M1, knit to next m, M1, slip m, knit to the end.
    • R4: K.
    • R5-11: Repeat in this manner until there are 11 sts in between markers for thumb.
    • R12: K1, remove first maker, place next 11 sts on waste yarn, remove second marker. CO 1st, K to end. Back to 24 sts total.
    • R13-14: K with color B.
  4. Garter rows:
    • R1: K with color A.
    • R2: P with color A.
    • R3: K with color B.
    • R4: P with color B.
    • R5-8: Repeat R1-4 one more time.
    • R9: K with color A.
    • BO purlwise with color A (5 ridges including this BO row)

  1. Thumb:
    • Put 11 sts back on the needle. Pick up 1 st, 12 sts total. Continue with the stripe pattern.
    • R1: K with color A
    • R2: K with color B
    • R3: P with color B
    • R4: K with color A
    • BO purlwise with color A (2 ridges including this BO row)

This is the kids’ version of Shima Shima.

Shima Shima



Shima Shima
You can use a solid color, or alternate every two rows with different color yarn to make your wrist warmer “shima shima” (stripe). The sample is used solid green and variegated blue/purple yarn.
Finished Measurement: Women's medium, to fit hand 7" circumference. Length: 12", width: 3.5".
Yarn: 1 skein each of solid and variegated DK-weight yarn
Shown in: Malabrigo silky merino (sunny lime 407), Noro silk garden (color 395).
Needles: Double pointed US8 needles, or 32" circular needles, using magic loop method.
Notions: Crochet hook, tapestry needle, waste yarn.
Gauge: 4 sts per inch in the stockinette pattern.

  3. Wrist (vertical stripes): Be careful not to make it too tight!
    • R1-7: K1P1 ribbing in this section. K1 with color B, P1 with color A all around. Hold one yarn in right hand and the other in left hand. (Two handed two color knitting tutorial here.) Continue in this stripe for 7 rows.
  4. Thumb gusset:
    • R1-2: K with color A
    • R3-4: K with color B
    • Move the beginning of the row to the other end: K14 with color A. This is going to be the beginning of the row now, and this is also going to be the beginning of the thumb. (This is so that the seam will be on the pinky side.) The color change will remain at the other side (pinky side) of the hand. Continue with the stripe pattern throughout this section.
    • R5 (increase rnd): K1, pm, M1, k1 M1, pm knit to the end (beginning of the thumb). 2 sts increased, 3 sts between markers for thumb.
    • R6-7: Work two rounds even.
    • R8 (Increase rnd): K1, sl m, M1, knit to next m, M1, slip m, knit to the end.
    • R9-10: Work 2 rnds.
    • Repeat the last three rnds (R8-10) until there are 13 sts in between markers for thumb.
    • Next rnd: K1, remove first maker, place next 13 sts on waste yarn, remove second marker. CO 1st, K to end. 28 sts total.
    • Next two rnds: K with color A.
    • Next two rnds: K with color B.
  5. Garter rows:
    • R1: K with color A.
    • R2: P with color A.
    • R3: K with color B.
    • R4: P with color B.
    • R5-12: Repeat until you have 6 ridges.
    • R13: K with color A.
    • BO purlwise with color A.

  6. Thumb:
    • Put 13 sts back on the needle. Pick up 1 st, 14 sts total. Continue with the stripe pattern.
    • R1-2: K with color A
    • R3: K with color B
    • R4: P with color B
    • R5: K with color A
    • R6: P with color A
    • R7: K with color B
    • R8: P with color B
    • R9: K with color A
